 Community
Empowerment Association was formally founded by veteran
community activist, T. Rashad Byrdsong, in 1994 in an effort
to reduce and prevent violence in the Homewood-Brushton area
of Pittsburgh. Byrdsong's nationally acclaimed approach to
combating violence included the entire spectrum of persons
and systems that contribute to it, from the youths firing
guns to the manufacturers and distributors of weapons.
CEA was designed to run as a grassroots outreach
organization that would be able to meet the needs of the
people on demand and on time. The unique combination of a
grassroots structure and breadth of vision has given CEA
amazing clarity and endurance. Today, CEA offers community
clean up, after-school programs, human services, re-entry
and job training, truancy, behavioral health, and many other
needed programs and initiatives. |
