Structural racism is embedded in systems through policies, protocols, and institutional missions. These systems are controlled and dominated by boards of directors and shareholders, usually white males, whose sole purpose is to generate capital by exploiting the workforce.
We have to begin developing parallel systems and independent institutions that will generate a political and economic ecosystem within the Black community, geared toward building institutional infrastructures that can compete with our own products in the national and international marketplace.
This means generating access for small Black businesses, youth entrepreneurship, strong economic development initiatives, quality education, health care, housing, and family-sustaining services.
WE NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK!
No matter who is at the helm of political leadership, whether it’s state senators, legislators, council members, or mayors, they need to collectively start working on a strategic plan of action with regular people on the ground, who represent the Black community, to address systemic, institutional, structural racism and the neglect of upward mobility for Black citizens here in Pittsburgh.
We must develop a Manifesto, a contract with Black people and the city, to address a concrete strategy for eliminating disparities, inequalities, white privilege, and exclusion.
This includes creating:
Educational opportunities
Economic development opportunities
Affordable housing
Workforce access
Equitable contracts
Support for small businesses and youth entrepreneurship
Join the community conversation.
