Open Letter to the City of Pittsburgh, the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Civic Leadership

Equity and Community Commitment
For many years, the City of Pittsburgh and neighborhood representatives have acknowledged the importance of equity, inclusion, and reinvestment in underserved communities. Local residents and community leaders, particularly within historically marginalized neighborhoods, have done their part by developing comprehensive community plans that clearly outline long-standing systemic inequities and the critical need for sustained economic investment.
The Reality in Black Neighborhoods
Despite these efforts, many Black neighborhoods across the city continue to experience disinvestment, limited access to capital, and insufficient economic development. The gap between stated commitments and lived realities remains wide.
The Economic Opportunity of the NFL Draft
The upcoming NFL Draft, which is projected to generate significant economic activity, potentially exceeding $100 million for the region, presents a meaningful opportunity to align economic growth with equitable impact. Major events of this scale should not only benefit downtown corridors and established business districts, but also contribute to long-term community development in neighborhoods that have historically been excluded from such gains.

A Call for Intentional Reinvestment
We believe it is reasonable and responsible for the City, in collaboration with the NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, to consider dedicating a percentage of the economic benefits generated by the Draft toward reinvestment in low-income and historically Black neighborhoods. This could include support for small businesses, workforce development, youth programming, housing stabilization, and community-led economic initiatives.
Shared Accountability for Lasting Impact
This message is a call for shared accountability and intentional reinvestment. Pittsburgh has long celebrated its identity as a city of champions, innovation, and resilience. True leadership means ensuring that prosperity is inclusive and that major economic moments translate into tangible, lasting benefits for all communities.
Moving Forward Together
We urge institutional partners, civic leaders, and professional sports organizations to listen to community voices, honor existing community plans, and take meaningful steps toward equitable development that strengthens the entire city.
