A Message to My Dear Brothers

Brothers,

Brother Khalid Raheem
Brother Khalid Raheem

I attended Brother Khalid Raheem’s janazah (funeral) recently. I saw many brothers I have not seen in years. It was good to see familiar faces, but it also stirred something heavy in my spirit.

It’s a shame that too often the only time we come together is when one of us makes transition. We have to do better at staying connected.

Many of us share deep history, some good, some bad, and some indifferent. But whatever differences we think divide us, they can always be reconciled if there is humility, honesty, and love.

The collective strength we hold as brothers should be directed toward the upliftment and protection of our communities, not left untapped or wasted through distance and silence.

Black Men, Young and Old: Collective Strength

We're not getting any younger. And the young folks need access to the wisdom, experience, and lessons of their elders, not after we’re gone, but while we are still here.

Let’s not wait for another janazah to reconnect.

Let’s reach out.

Let’s build.

Let’s heal.

Let’s move forward together on purpose.

Peace and respect.
