The Healing of Black Men and Boys

The disappearance and absence of Black men from the home has severely impacted the social construct, culture, and socialization of Black boys. The loss of Black men from the family and community unit has led to literally thousands of Black boys growing up without knowledge of their social roles as men and their relationships with one another, their families, and their communities. 

The fundamental building blocks of Black manhood must begin with love and a sense of security, belonging, and well-being. These are basic drives of all human beings. Black men must love, embrace, and teach Black boys how to become Black men.

We—the fathers, uncles, and grandfathers—must reconnect with these young men and boys and begin a process of manhood development training and community building. There are literally thousands of young men and boys who have grown up without men in their lives, and who are still detached and disconnected from Black men. 

We are calling on Black men to assist in the deconstruction of conflict among Black men and boys, and the reconstruction of healthy relationships that will lead to the empowerment of families and communities. We must set concrete examples by practicing operational unity despite our perceived differences—differences that have been perpetuated by white supremacy and racism. 

We have more in common than we think we do. Unfortunately, we have been subjected to white supremacy and racism and the internalization of self-hatred, which has led to the disconnection of Black men from our women, children, and community. 

We must stop practicing genocide and self-destructive behaviors against one another and become liberators for our community. 

The counterintelligence operations of the 1960s are still in effect. Their objectives were to incite division among individuals, progressive institutions, and movements; to undermine and create disunity among progressive voices from the Black community; and to prevent the unification of progressive leadership. 

The history of our movement is clearly defined for those of us who study history and respect the wisdom of our elders. The strategies of white supremacy and racism remain the same—they are simply wrapped in things that shine and glitter but with the same destructive effect. 

The unification and solidarity of Black men is imperative for the survival of the Black community.
